Retailism #5:
Every downtown leader has asked the same question:
“How do we attract better retail?”
The truth is that thriving retail districts aren’t created through luck, incentives, or a single recruitment effort. They’re cultivated.
Strong retail ecosystems emerge when communities invest in the right ingredients over time: local entrepreneurs, supportive policies, active partnerships, great public spaces, thoughtful development, and leaders willing to play the long game.
For years, I’ve had the opportunity to work with communities across North America, helping downtowns understand what makes local retail successful. Along the way, I’ve developed a collection of “Retailisms”—simple truths about how great retail districts are built.
This fall, I’m taking those Retailisms on the road.
I’m excited to announce the inaugural Retail Study Tour, a three-day immersive learning experience in Fort Collins, Colorado—one of the country’s most successful examples of a college-town retail ecosystem.
This won’t be a conference.
It won’t be a series of PowerPoint presentations.
Instead, participants will spend three days learning directly from the people who have helped shape Fort Collins into a nationally recognized downtown destination:
- Independent retailers
- Restaurateurs
- Small-scale developers
- Downtown leaders
- Community partners
Together, we’ll explore what it really takes to build a downtown where local businesses thrive and visitors return again and again. Most importantly, we’ll focus on practical strategies and tactics participants can bring back to their own communities.
To keep the experience highly interactive and provide behind-the-scenes access, participation will be limited to just 20 attendees. We’re already building the inaugural cohort, and I expect the tour to fill quickly once registration opens.
If you’ve ever wanted to go beyond conference sessions and see retail development in action, this experience was designed for you.
